A gas-trap tube, or Durham tube, is generally used in biology experiments to monitor gas produced by micro-organisms. The tube is placed upside down inside a larger test tube; at the start of the experiment a growth medium in which the micro-organisms can grow is added to the Durham tube, which is then incubated in an incubator.
