What a PCB factory's QC lab actually needs
Every PCB plant commissioning lines in Prachinburi or Ayutthaya right now faces the same three auditor questions: how do you control your plating baths, how do you verify incoming material, and where are the records? A PCB factory's QC lab is not a general chemistry room built to satisfy a checklist. Its work splits into three clean blocks: bath control, incoming inspection, and finished-board checks.
Block one: control the baths before they control you
Our position: the first instrument a PCB lab should own is not the microscope. It is the titration bench. Acid copper baths need their copper, acid and chloride tracked on a fixed cycle; micro-etch and tin chemistries carry cycles of their own. The control limits for each formulation live in that supplier's technical data sheet, not in any generic table. One shift of a drifted bath can scrap a whole lot of panels. The microscope finds the problem after the money is gone. The titration bench finds it before.
The bench itself is unglamorous: burettes and volumetric glassware, an analytical balance reading to 0.1 mg, pH and conductivity meters, a hotplate stirrer, a hydrometer or Baume float for bath specific gravity, and a drying oven for sample preparation. All of it is standard chemistry-lab equipment, which also means all of it is fast to replace in Thailand when something breaks.
The titration log and its SPC charts are a sales document as much as a QC record. Automotive customers and suppliers into the big electronics brands ask to see the history before they release orders. A lab that has recorded everything from day one is not a cost line; it closes deals.
Block two: incoming inspection and dimensional checks
A PCB plant's raw materials are laminate, dry film and process chemistry, and every lot arrives with a certificate of analysis. The lab's job is to spot-check that the certificate tells the truth. The core tools: a stereo microscope for surface defects and annular ring checks, dimensional instruments such as micrometers, vernier calipers and thickness gauges, and thermometers plus environmental meters for the material stores that must hold temperature and humidity.
The methods auditors cite most are the IPC-TM-650 set, which IPC publishes method by method as free downloads on its own site. Acceptance criteria sit in IPC-A-600 and the qualification spec in IPC-6012; those two are paid documents. Do not buy the full shelf on day one. Buy the volumes your customer contracts actually cite.
DI water: buy for the method, not for the number
Laboratory water references ASTM D1193, which grades reagent water from Type I to Type IV. Routine titration and solution preparation are more than covered by Type II. Our position: do not pay for an 18.2 megohm system across the whole lab because the catalogue number looks impressive. Match the water to the methods you run today, and upgrade when an instrument that genuinely needs Type I arrives.
What to outsource, at least at first
Ionic contamination testing, solder float and thermal stress work, and cross-section metallography all need dedicated equipment and someone who does them regularly. Early-stage sample volumes almost never justify the machines. Send them to an outside lab, and pull them in-house when production stabilises and the numbers say it pays. The rule generalises across industries: work done every shift stays near the line; work done a few times a year is bought as a service.
