Vacuum Pumps

Diaphragm, rotary and water-jet vacuum pumps and aspirators for filtration, evaporation and general lab use.

Vacuum filtration setup guide

Quote the complete filtration path—not the pump alone

A working setup combines a pump, protection trap, tubing, filter holder, receiver and membrane that are compatible with the sample. Chemistry, viscosity, solids and batch volume determine the configuration.

Vacuum filtration setup guide

Five decisions for a complete vacuum filtration setup

01

Sample chemistry

State whether the sample is aqueous, organic, acidic, alkaline or otherwise corrosive. Wetted pump, tubing, holder and flask materials must be checked against the actual chemicals.

02

Vacuum and flow

Give sample volume, viscosity and suspended-solids loading. Pump vacuum and flow should match the filtration duty and receiver size; a higher specification is not automatically faster for every membrane.

03

Pump protection

Use a safety or moisture trap between the receiver and pump where liquid carryover is possible. The trap is intended to reduce the risk of filtrate entering and damaging the pump.

04

Holder, flask and membrane

Specify membrane diameter, material and pore size together with filter-holder and receiver volume. Selection depends on sample compatibility and the required separation.

05

Duty and environment

State run time, batches per day, noise, footprint, voltage and exhaust expectations. Chemical vapor handling and maintenance depend on the pump design.

Include this in a filtration request

  • Sample and chemical composition
  • Batch volume, viscosity and solids
  • Required membrane and pore size
  • Filter holder and receiver volume
  • Vacuum, flow and duty cycle
  • Trap, tubing, voltage and accessories

Vacuum filtration questions

Can I use the same pump for water and organic solvents?

Do not assume so. Rocker distinguishes general aqueous service, PTFE-coated pumps for moderate chemical exposure and fully chemical-resistant designs for corrosive or aggressive vapors. Verify every wetted material for the sample.

Why include a safety trap?

A trap between the receiver and pump helps prevent liquid carryover into the pump during upset or incorrect operation. It does not replace correct setup and supervision.

Does stronger vacuum always make filtration faster?

Not always. Membrane, cake buildup, viscosity, solids, holder area, leaks and receiver size can control the rate. Select the system as a whole.
