Balance

Balances and scales of every type, from analytical and precision balances for the lab to floor and bench scales for production, medical scales and moisture analyzers. Tell us capacity and readability and we will shortlist models. Quotations are free.

Balance & scale selection guide

Specify the smallest sample as well as the heaviest load

A balance must accommodate the container and largest load, while meeting the required accuracy for the smallest net sample. Readability is only the display increment. Start with those two loads and the allowed weighing tolerance before comparing model names or decimal places.

Balance & scale selection guide

Five decisions that narrow the shortlist

01

Capacity, smallest sample and tolerance

Give the maximum gross load including the container, the smallest net sample and the allowable error in mg or percent. A balance that displays a small increment is not automatically suitable for weighing a sample of that size. Minimum usable weight depends on measurement uncertainty and the required tolerance.

02

Compare a named model and its exact variant

Our catalog includes OHAUS PX323 and PX323/E. OHAUS specifies 320 g capacity and 0.001 g readability for PX323, with semi-automatic InCal internal adjustment. Ask the quotation to state the adjustment arrangement and accessories for the exact suffix; matching capacity and display digits alone is not a complete comparison.

03

Match the workplace and load type

Describe airflow, vibration, temperature changes, dust or washdown exposure, and the container footprint. Check the actual model and accessories for a draft shield, pan size and any required IP rating. Patient weighing, floor loads and moisture analysis are separate applications and should be specified as such.

04

Separate adjustment, calibration and routine checks

Internal adjustment helps set the balance response; it is not the same deliverable as an external calibration certificate. If your quality system requires calibration, specify the locations, points, uncertainty reporting and acceptance criteria to agree with the provider. Include suitable check weights and a risk-based routine-check plan where needed.

05

Record handling and receipt

List printing or computer export, connection type and the result fields required by your quality system. At receipt, reconcile the exact model, serial number, accessories and agreed certificates. Complete installation and the checks specified by your method before using the balance for reportable results.

Include this in a weighing request

  • Maximum gross load including the container, and container dimensions
  • Smallest net sample and allowable weighing error in mg or percent
  • Required readability and the method or acceptance specification
  • Airflow, vibration, temperature, dust, washdown or special application
  • Adjustment type, calibration scope, check weights and data-output requirements
  • Quantity, installation location, delivery province, required date and procurement reference

Common balance and scale questions

Does a 0.001 g display mean I can accurately weigh a 0.001 g sample?

No. That number is readability. The minimum sample that meets your tolerance must be assessed from performance and uncertainty in the working environment. Tell the supplier the smallest net sample and the allowed error, not only the number of decimal places.

What is the practical difference between analytical and precision balances?

The terms describe instrument families, but selection still needs the model-specific capacity, readability and performance data. An analytical balance is often chosen for smaller samples; the label alone does not establish that it meets your method.

Does internal calibration remove the need for a calibration certificate?

No. Internal adjustment and a documented calibration serve different purposes. If a certificate is required, agree the service scope, measurement points and uncertainty information separately. Do not assume a factory quality document satisfies the laboratory requirement.

How should we describe a small sample in a heavy container?

State both numbers separately, for example the minimum net sample and the maximum combined container-plus-sample load. The gross load determines needed capacity; the small net addition is what must meet the weighing tolerance.

Official manufacturer references

The PX323 example follows the manufacturer specification. The selection references explain minimum sample weight, tolerance and calibration in the operating environment; no single minimum weight or calibration interval applies to every laboratory.

Model specifications and a laboratory acceptance assessment determine suitability. If the scale is used for buying or selling by weight, state that use explicitly so the applicable Thai verification requirements can be checked separately.
