For comparable results, define the viscometer model or torque range, spindle, speed, temperature, container and sample preparation together. A viscosity value without those conditions may not reproduce the same test.

Five choices to define before selecting a viscometer

Method or historical setup

If a specification or established test names the instrument, spindle and speed, reproduce that setup. This preserves comparability with earlier results and customer requirements.

Viscosity and torque range

Give the expected minimum and maximum viscosity. Brookfield guidance recommends choosing spindle and speed combinations that keep the reading between 10% and 100% torque.

Spindle and speed

Higher-viscosity samples generally require a smaller spindle and/or slower speed. Non-Newtonian samples can report different apparent viscosity when spindle or speed changes.

Temperature and container

Temperature, container diameter, sample volume, immersion depth and air bubbles affect results. State the controlled temperature and any small-sample limitation.

Accessories and records

List spindle set, stand, guard leg, temperature probe or bath, small-sample adapter, data export and calibration-standard needs. Compatibility is model-specific.

How do I choose spindle and speed?

Use the combination required by the method when one exists. For an unknown sample, Brookfield recommends adjusting spindle and speed until the displayed torque is between 10% and 100%, then keeping the condition consistent for comparable tests.

Why does viscosity change when speed changes?

Many materials are non-Newtonian, so measured apparent viscosity depends on shear conditions. Report the spindle, speed, temperature and other test conditions with the result.

Can I compare results from different containers?

Container geometry can change the measurement, particularly with standard spindles. Use the specified container or document its dimensions and validate the method before comparing results.
