Water Testing & Analysis

Dissolved oxygen, salinity, turbidity, chlorine and multiparameter meters for water analysis in labs, aquaculture and treatment plants.

Water analysis selection guide

Turn the water-testing requirement into a parameter-by-parameter order

A water-testing setup can combine sensors for pH, conductivity and dissolved oxygen with photometric tests for specific substances. List the result, expected range and required method for each parameter, then quote the instruments and the supplies that each method consumes.

Water analysis selection guide

Five decisions behind a water testing quote

01

Specify the result and reporting unit

Write free chlorine or total chlorine, not just chlorine. Include the expected minimum and maximum, reporting unit and decision limit from your method or customer requirement. For example, a value reported as a substance is not automatically interchangeable with a value reported as its constituent element.

02

Compare methods before model counts

Hanna HI97701 measures free chlorine over 0.00 to 5.00 mg/L as Cl₂. For a requirement covering both free and total chlorine, the manufacturer offers HI97711 with separate reagent choices. This illustrates why a quotation must name each result and reagent code, even when instrument ranges look alike.

03

Distinguish a sensor system from a photometer

The HI98494 listed in our catalog uses pH/ORP, conductivity and optical DO sensors. Its multiparameter label does not mean it performs the chlorine photometer methods above. Match every requested parameter to a documented channel, sensor or photometric method.

04

Count tests and replacement supplies

State monthly sample tests plus blanks, quality-control checks and repeats required by the method. For photometers, list reagent codes, pack sizes, cuvettes and storage limits. For sensor systems, include the relevant caps, maintenance solutions and replacement sensors. Compare total recurring requirements rather than assuming one cost always dominates.

05

Plan verification and procurement documents

Request model-specific check standards where appropriate. Hanna HI97701-11, for example, has a certificate carrying its lot, reference values and expiry. Keep a manufacturer quality certificate, a standard certificate and a separately requested calibration service as distinct quotation items. Specify site, cable length and record-export needs.

Include this in a water testing request

  • Each parameter, including free or total chlorine where relevant, and reporting units
  • Expected sample range and the decision limit or specification to assess
  • Required method, sample matrix and existing instrument or reagent codes
  • Monthly tests plus the blanks, controls and repeats in your procedure
  • Field or bench use, cable or sampling needs and output format
  • Reagents, check standards, replacement parts, certificates, quantity and delivery province

Common water testing questions

Can I request one instrument for all water parameters?

Start with a parameter matrix. A multiparameter sensor instrument and a multiparameter photometer support different techniques. Mark which device, sensor or method produces each required result before deciding whether one instrument is enough.

Can I use free-chlorine reagents to report total chlorine?

Only use the reagent and procedure specified for the result. Hanna lists HI93701-01 for free chlorine and HI93711-01 for total chlorine in its HI97711 reference guide. Similar packaging or a common instrument does not make the methods interchangeable.

Does a CAL Check standard replace the sample reagent?

No. A model-specific check standard verifies the instrument against a reference; the sample test still uses its stated reagent and procedure. Check which standards are included in the exact kit and which need separate ordering.

How should we compare running costs?

Compare the same workload and verification plan: tests per month, reagents per test, control and repeat use, expiry losses and replaceable sensor parts. Ask for an itemized supply list so a lower instrument price does not conceal an incomplete setup.

Manufacturer methods and ordering references

These references support the named chlorine-method comparison, check-standard documents and sensor-system example. Verify the current model, method and kit supplied in Thailand before ordering.

This buying guide does not decide which method meets a legal or customer requirement. The laboratory must confirm the accepted method, sample suitability and reporting units; quoted ranges and consumables must match that choice.
